The US National Retail Federation is projecting that sales for November and December will rise 3.6% to 4% this year, compared to a 4% increase last year.

For the last decade or so, dozens of the world's largest retailers have shifted the unofficial start date of the holiday shopping season one day forward, from Black Friday - so named because it's the busiest shopping day of the year and pushes retailers' bottom lines into the black - to Thanksgiving Day.

Walmart, Target, Macy's, JCPenney, Best Buy, Toys R Us, Kohl's, and Dick's Sporting Goods all announced plans to open at least some of their stores on Thanksgiving evening to draw in holiday shoppers.

Over the holiday weekend, millions of people across the country are planning to shop, but Friday itself will see the most shoppers, with 115 million expected to hit the shopping malls and stand-alone stores.

Black Friday has been a hit in America and has also seen crowds rushing to shops in the United Kingdom in recent years.

With Black Friday becoming more popular, the term is morphing into Black November. After all, Amazon Cyber Monday sales will kick off within a few days, and there will surely be plenty more TV deals popping up then.
