AC-130 Gunship Simulator screenshot apparently proves the U.S. works with ISIS

The Russian Ministry of Defense had to delete its posts.

Russia's defence ministry has tried to pass off what appear to be stills from a mobile phone military simulation game as "irrefutable evidence" of cooperation between USA forces and Islamic State militants in Syria, Guardian writes. Instead, it said, American forces interfered with Russian air operations, allowing ISIS to recover and redeploy.

Asked about Russian allegations of the USA helping Islamic State around Albu Kamal, Colonel Ryan Dillon, spokesman for the US -led coalition fighting Islamic State, said: "The Russian ministry of defense statements are about as accurate as their air campaign and I think that is a reason for them to start, you know, coming out with their latest barrage of lies".

The original is consistent with a June 2016 Iraqi military video, which shows coalition airstrikes and Iraqi military forces attacking an ISIS convoy fleeing Falluja.

In fact, it was taken from a 2015 promotional video showing AC-130 Gunship Simulator: Special Ops Squadron, a mobile game in which players fire at ground targets from a United States warplane.

Russia's defense ministry on Tuesday posted images it said proved the U.S. was aiding the Islamic State jihadist group in the Middle East, but social media users pointed out they included a still from a videogame.

AFP was able to compare the images in the emailed defence ministry statement with the images of the videogame on YouTube and confirm the resemblance.

Russia, which entered the conflict in late 2015 on the side of Bashar al-Assad's government, has long accused the west of backing extremist groups in Syria.

Russian Federation recently cited stills from a video game as proof that the US was working with ISIS before quickly receiving backlash and ridicule from those who recognized the images.

It is not the first time that the Russian defence ministry has tried to pass off footage of other events as its own.

The ministry is investigating its civil employee who attached a wrong photo to illustrate the ministry's statement on Abu Kamal.
