Red Wings Sign Andreas Athanasiou

Red Wings Sign Andreas Athanasiou

Athanasiou made $575,000 with a cap hit of $628,333 last season, but after the Red Wings refused to meet his asking price, he explored other options, including playing overseas. He has appeared in all eight of the Red Wings' games this year but has yet to tally a point. Athanasiou agreed to a one-year contract worth $1.378 million.

The Red Wings have given themselves some salary cap space. Sheahan is pointless so far this year but has a big opportunity with the Penguins. In 20 playoff games, Wilson had three goals and three assists.

This season in Hartford (AHL), Puempel has one goal and two assists in five games. At this point in his development, he has the potential to take the next step and have a breakout season - that wasn't going to happen while he was skating in Switzerland by himself, looking for a contract from a Swiss team.

Athanasiou, 23, needed to sign somewhere in the National Hockey League before December 1, which is the deadline for any restricted free agent who remains without a contract.

The two sides have been on a standoff since Athanasiou's entry-level contract expired on July 1, with the 23-year-old reportedly pushing for a $2.5 million average annual value on a two-year deal.

Sheahan is the newest Penguin after the Red Wings packaged him and a 2018 fifth-round draft pick for Scott Wilson and a 2018 third-round pick Saturday, Bob McKenzie of TSN reports. "This thing is either going to get done here in the next day or so, or it's likely he's going to sign to play in Europe and who know when or if he'll be back in the Red Wing lineup". He and the Red Wings finally got a deal done but it was only a one year deal.
