Potential Tropical Cyclone 18 developing in Caribbean

Potential Tropical Cyclone 18 developing in Caribbean

Tropical storm watches and warnings may be needed for the Cayman Islands, central and western Cuba, and the central and northwestern Bahamas later today. The tropical disturbance, although it has a high chance for development into a fully tropical system, doesn't have too much time to do so.

The trough of low pressure in the western Caribbean Sea was showing signs of some further organization Friday morning, leaving the National Hurricane Center to increase the odds of development. If the disturbance becomes a tropical storm, it would be called "Philippe".

November sees one more tropical storm or hurricane, on average, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Heavy rain is possible in Southwest Florida mainly in the afternoon and evening Saturday, with isolated urban and rural flooding possible.

A faster northward motion is expected to begin tonight, followed by a faster motion toward the northeast on Saturday and Sunday.

Also that year, Tropical Storm Epsilon became a hurricane on December 6.

By Sunday, the area of enhanced moisture associated with Potential Tropical Cyclone Eighteen will be in the western Atlantic Ocean, just off the southeast USA coastline.

The system has a 40 percent chance of developing into at least a tropical depression within five days. "Increasing upper-level winds will make conditions less favorable when the system moves north of Cuba and merges with a cold front on Sunday".

Over the next day or two, heavy rain is also expected over the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, parts of Cuba and the northwestern and central Bahamas.

Much of this rain may fall during a few hours, which will bring the potential for street and low-lying area flooding. Hurricane Hunter aircraft flew through the system to investigate the potential for development and found wind speeds of 35 knots and no well defined center of rotation.
