Home Sec Amber Rudd: 'Yeah, I don't understand encryption. So what?'

Home Secretary Amber Rudd has announced plans to outlaw the carrying of acids in public, with sales to people under-18 to be banned after a spate of attacks across the United Kingdom she described as "absolutely revolting".

The Conservative Party is holding its annual conference this week, and Home Secretary Amber Rudd is expected to announce the new powers aimed at tackling radicalization today, The Guardian reports. We have all seen the pictures of victims...

The British government seeks to crackdown on the recent spike of "absolutely revolting" acid attacks by school-aged children by banning the sale of corrosive substances to underage kids. 'I am also announcing a new offence to prevent the sale of acids to under-18s.

Intelligence agencies in the country should have access to messages on platforms like WhatsApp even if they are encrypted because violent extremists use the technology to hide their communications, particularly the logistics and planning of terrorist operations, Rudd said in March.

Ms Rudd said: "We are going to prevent children purchasing knives online, and we are going to stop people carrying acid in public if they don't have a good reason".

After revealing a joint Anglo-Canadian project called Project Arachnid that can, she suggested, crawl the internet identifying images of child sexual abuse, helping to get them taken down, she continued her assertion that technology companies should do more to help governments tap internet communications services. Our question to them will be "if not, why not".

Rudd said that while there had been five terror attacks in London and Manchester this year, Britain's security services had succeeded in stopping a further seven attacks.

And, this morning, Rudd doubled-down on her argument in her speech to conference. "And I will demand very clear answers", she threatened.

Elsewhere, extremists who repeatedly view terrorist content online could face up to 15 years in jail, she said.

Ms Rudd called on Facebook, Google, Twitter and Microsoft to "honor your moral obligations" and build on their progress in countering terrorism online.

There will also be a consultation on new laws around offensive weapons, which will be published later this autumn.
