Flying to US? Get set for more checks, including security interviews

According to CNBC, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA)'s new stricter screening process goes into effect on Thursday. Officials gave airlines 120 days to comply with the measures; the deadline was October 26. Previously, laptops had been banned in the cabin on flights originating in eight counties in the Middle East and North Africa.

The enhanced checks are in line with new guidelines set by the U.S. in July for incoming flights. Those without check-in baggage can proceed to the boarding gate directly "as early as possible", where they will also be subject to a short security interview, the airline said. Some people are concerned these interviews could cause flight delays.

"We see this as a big issue for China Airlines", Steve Chang, senior vice president of the Taiwanese firm told reporters on Wednesday, adding the airline was trying to consult with the American Institute in the country over the issue.

"Customers are advised to refer to the respective check-in counter opening hours, and to arrive at the airport early to allow sufficient time for enhanced security measures", the airline said. "It's just inconvenient for the passengers".

"The security measures affect all individuals, worldwide passengers and U.S. citizens, travelling to the United States from a last point of departure global location", said Lisa Farbstein, a spokeswoman for the TSA. Cathay Pacific told its customers to arrive three hours in advance.

The International Air Transport Association, which represents 275 airlines, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Unilateral measures announced without any prior consultation ...

At their annual meeting in Taipei, Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) members passed a resolution calling for security measures to be risk-based, outcome-focused and proportionate to the probable threat. TSA will get a clearer view of the electronics when they are outside bags that can be a haphazard array of packed essentials.

The restriction came amid fears that a concealed bomb could be installed in electronic devices taken on board aircraft. Passengers on all flights are now required to remove all devices larger than a mobile phone from their carry-on luggage for screening.
