Federation Internationale de Football Association confirms 8 top-seeded teams in World Cup draw

Federation Internationale de Football Association confirms 8 top-seeded teams in World Cup draw

The same procedure will then be repeated for the remaining balls in the two pots.

The latest Federation Internationale de Football Association rankings, released on Tuesday (NZT), show Peru has climbed two places into 10th, their highest-ever position.

First of all, a team will be drawn from pot 1, and then another from pot 2.

The eight teams to make it through to the play-offs are Sweden, Switzerland, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Denmark, Italy, Greece and Croatia.

Chile stayed in ninth despite missing out on World Cup qualification and Peru rose into the top 10 for the first time after qualifying for the intercontinental play-off against New Zealand. That draw takes place on Tuesday.

According to the October rankings, Germany, Brazil, Portugal, Argentina, Belgium, Poland and France will be in pot 1 along with hosts Russian Federation.

After a busy qualifying program last week, Brazil, Portugal, Argentina, Belgium and Poland are also top-seeded for the December 1 draw in Moscow.

Spain will lead the second grouping, and beyond that, it gets a little tricky.

Mexico at No. 16 heads CONCACAF teams.

South Korea, Saudi Arabia and first-timer Panama are set for this grouping no matter what.

As always, teams from the same region must be kept separate in the draw, aside from UEFA, where up to two European nations can be in the same group.

The Republic, who progressed to the World Cup play-offs, rose eight places to 26th, while Scotland climbed 14 places to 29th despite missing out on a place in Russian Federation 2018 - a result which subsequently saw Gordon Strachan depart as boss.
