65 percent of baby products tested in study had arsenic in them

An alarming new study in the Clean Label Project in Denver, Colorado, inspected more than 530 baby foods for toxin test. 65% found that the products tested positive for arsenic, a metalloid that can cause cancer, cardiovascular diseases and many other health issues affecting child's motor skills and cognition.

The chemicals found in the baby food products and infant formulas can pose risk to babies' brain development and their body parts. What's more, nearly 80 percent of infant formula tested positive for traces of arsenic, while 60 percent of the products stating that they were "BPA free" actually tested positive for BPA.

And, according to the data from the Clean Label Project, there are other chemicals in foods that parents need to be aware of. 36% of those foods tested for lead, 58% for cadmium and 10% for acrylamide.

The study was conducted by the Clean Label Project, a non-profit organization seeking to foster consumer transparency.

Among the baby cereals tested, Happy Baby Oatmeal Organic Probiotic Baby Cereal was ranked the best, followed by three Beech-Nut products and Little Duck Organics Mighty Oats Cereal 5 Ancient Grains Naked Cereal. The organization tests products in various categories (thus far they have tested pet food and baby food) for contaminates and then rates them on a five-star scale, with five stars representing the "purest". The group looked at top-selling formulas and baby food using Nielson data, and also included emerging national brands. Several studies have already found traces of the said chemical in rice-based food products. Lead is also a naturally occurring metal. No amount of lead is safe, but it's not regulated. In 2016, the FDA recommended that rice cereal should not contain more arsenic than 100 parts per billion though this was a suggestion to manufacturers that the agency does not enforce. Due to this babies can also develop abnormalities at the later stage of life.

The top five and bottom five products in each category can be found here. Even 60% of the "BPA free" products were contaminated with bisphenol A, another harmful industrial chemical.
