Three more Democratic 2020 prospects back Bernie Sanders' single-payer bill

Three more Democratic 2020 prospects back Bernie Sanders' single-payer bill

Sens. Kamala Harris of California, Elizabeth Warren of MA and Cory Booker of New Jersey - rising party leaders and potential 2020 contenders - will be co-sponsoring the bill.

Bernie Sanders is watching growing support for his universal medicare bill. Senate panel approves funds for United Nations climate agency MORE (D-W.V.) on Tuesday clarified that he is "skeptical" of a single-payer healthcare system, saying that he simply supports digging into the complex details of the idea to see if it has potential. On Monday, Senators Cory Booker and Jeff Merkley backed the initiative; Senators Elizabeth Warren and Kamala D. Harris have also already gotten on the single-payer train.

The idea thrills the Democratic Party's progressive base and has won support from several potential 2020 presidential hopefuls.

Booker opposed Republican efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act with legislation that the Congressional Budget Office said would leave more than 20 million additional Americans without health coverage.

During the California Democratic Party Convention in May, Perez used the same line, and was booed and heckled by a nurses' union for not voicing support for a single-payer system, the Sacramento Bee reported.

Warren and Harris, along with Sanders himself, have been discussed as likely candidates for president in 2020.

Under a single-payer system, the federal government would pay for all medical expenses. Max Baucus (D-MT) said last week that he also supports a single-payer system. And, they might say, Bernie Sanders' slow-moving triumph over the Democratic Party proves that they were right. The Republicans' self-inflicted defeat and their unwillingness to keep their Obamacare repeal promises have opened the door for a push for single-payer health care. No Democrat would run for president, or even for House or Senate minority leader, without supporting the DREAM Act.

Still, single-payer is gaining traction among Democrats. "I think healthcare should be a right to all".

It would offer Americans the same kind of health care that is afforded Canadians, where the government entirely funds health care through tax dollars and various "levies" that are deducted when people pay their income taxes every year. Tester said "we are so far away" from that debate in both March and June.

After former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was selected as the Democratic nominee for president in 2016, numerous voters who had backed Sanders in the primary were skeptical of her progressive chops.
