Thousands call for withdrawal of Suu Kyi's Nobel Prize

Desmond Tutu has condemned his fellow Nobel laureate and old friend Aung San Suu Kyi over her silence on the treatment of the Rohingya Muslims.

The Myanmar government, led by Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy, has rejected the accusations of atrocities against the Rohingya community, who are denied citizenship despite living in the Buddhist majority country for generations.

Burmese police and army have launched a violent crackdown in the state following attacks by Rohingya insurgents on border posts a year ago.

Mr Tutu said that he had come out of retirement to make the comments because he was so deeply moved by the situation.

But given that Myanmar's political leader is an honorary Canadian citizen, as a country we have an added responsibility.

Rohingya have described large-scale violence perpetrated by Burmese troops and Buddhist mobs - setting fire to their homes, spraying bullets indiscriminately and ordering them to leave or be killed.

The United Nations secretary general, Antonia Guterres, on Tuesday said, the government clearance operations in Rakhine risked ethnic cleansing.

Professor Muhammed Yunus has urged Suu Kyi to show leadership over the Rohingya crisis.

Suu Kyi's "democratic" credentials, for the first time, are coming under intense scrutiny. They held aloft banners which called on worldwide bodies to save the Rohingya Muslims from horrific violence.

Khin calls it ethnic cleansing, a slow genocide.

Tutu's letter noted than in 2010 he rejoiced at Suu Kyi's freedom from house arrest, and in 2012 at her election as leader of the opposition.

Aung San Suu Kyi said the situation in Rakhine has been hard for many decades and so it was "a little unreasonable" to expect her administration, which has been in power for 18 months, to have resolved it already.

The United Nations yesterday said that almost 164,000 Rohingya have escaped to Bangladesh over the past two weeks in the wake of a massive security sweep and alleged atrocities by security forces and Buddhist mobs against them.

"We know that you know that human beings may look and worship differently - and some may have greater firepower than others", he writes. The Rohingya - numbering around one million - are a long-persecuted minority in Myanmar.

She is under growing pressure to do more to protect the Rohingya, and a petition calling for her Nobel Peace Prize to be revoked has attracted more than 384,000 signatures.

She made the claim in a telephone call to Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan while discussing the violence that triggered a flood of more than 120,000 refugees to cross the border into neighbouring Bangladesh to flee the fighting.

The reality is that one "Lady's" terrorists are another one's insurgents, fighting against the excesses of a military machine bent on ethnically cleansing Myanmar of its Muslim minority and history.

Rohingya refugee Tayeba Khatun said she and her family had waited four days for a place on a boat after fleeing her township in Rakhine.
