Teenage sensation Mbappe joins PSG on loan

Teenage sensation Mbappe joins PSG on loan

The Neymar deal restricted PSG's ability to sign Mbappe right away, because of Financial Fair Play rules created to curtail excessive spending by clubs each season.

Brendan Rodgers, who manages Celtic - drawn in the same group as PSG in the Champions League, was more emphatic: "If they sign Mbappe, you could rip up Financial Fair Play".

"UEFA will make no further comments on this matter while the investigation is ongoing".

PSG has given no explanation as to why Mbappe had been initially signed on loan, but local media said it was an attempt to spread the payment to ensure PSG do not fall foul of FFP rules aimed at stopping clubs with rich owners spending their way to success.

UEFA explain FFP simply as "about improving the overall financial health of European club football".

This is PSG's last flex in a summer of flexes, and some of the world's best attacking players will be frustrated with lack of playing time in this set-up.

He then picked out an overlapping Djibril Sidibe who quickly returned the pass to see Mbappe fire a first time shot low into the bottom corner.

Barcelona were also linked with late move for Mbappe but that deal seemingly didn't come to fruition.

The transfers of Neymar - for a world record 222 million euros - and Mbappe will appear on PSG's financial statements for the 2017-18 tax year, with UEFA's assessment of FFP compliance coming a year after that.

PSG identified the acquisitions of Neymar and Mbappe as "a new phase in its project to build a club and a world leading sports franchise".

When that didn't work out because of a problem with FFP, the Ligue 1 side decided that signing him on loan with a view to signing him next summer would be a way around it.

PSG, according to BBC, have not even mentioned that the loan will become permanent, but only have stated that they have an option to do so. Mbappe was expected to join as recently as last week, but the move only just made it through before the transfer window shuts at midnight Thursday.

The club president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, added: "It was essential for French football that we keep and help develop such a great talent in our championship".

Introduced in 2010 with the aim of preventing clubs involved in their European competitions from spending more than they earn, PSG have responded to the investigation by insisting their accounts as of 30 June 2018 for the 2017/2018 season are in line with the criteria.

In their response to the investigation, PSG said they had already written off €104m including wages, this summer, and hinted that more players were likely to be sold before UEFA examines its books.
