SpaceX releases 'blooper reel' of failed rocket landings

Then he went and did the damn thing.

It's fair to say that Elon Musk and the team at SpaceX have been on an emotional rollercoaster in trying to get their reusable Falcon 9 rocket to take-off and then land all by itself.

Indeed, the video's cheeky "How Not to Land an Orbital Rocket Booster" and Monty Python theme music all indicate that to Musk, accidentally blowing up hundreds of millions of dollars worth of equipment into tiny little pieces was simply the cost of doing business.

Just watching these devastating missteps back-to-back makes you wonder how the company had the will to keep on pushing, but they did just that, and today SpaceX rockets routinely launch and land without a hitch.

Along with each clip is a caption explaining why the landing failed.

Not one to rest on his laurels, founder and CEO Elon Musk didn't even finish his celebratory tweet before announcing SpaceX's next big goal.

"The course of true love never did run smooth", another incident is labeled.

Now, since December 2015, the company has landed a total of 16 rockets, on either a landing platform at sea or its helicopter-like landing pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, turning what was once a jaw-dropping and unprecedented bit of aerial artistry into a somewhat ho-hum, to-be-expected exercise.

Musk teased the video's arrival last week: 'Putting together SpaceX rocket landing blooper reel. The landing of flight 23 resulted in the first stable FULL landing at sea in April of 2016. Since the first successful landing of one of these craft - through the August 14, 2017 launch, the company has successfully completed all landings where attempted (100% success rate).

As of January 2017, SpaceX landing rocket missions are no longer considered "experimental".
