Six ministers dropped in Cabinet reshuffle

Six ministers dropped in Cabinet reshuffle

After resigning from the post of Union Minister of State Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Rajiv Pratap Rudy said that his resignation from the post was the party's decision and further refuted any strategy behind it.

Government sources have also said that the six ministers who were asked to resign late last week were dropped because they were evaluated as non-performers.

While Bharti met BJP president Amit Shah on Wednesday, Mishra called on him on Thursday. The Cabinet reshuffle may take place before Prime Minister Narendra Modi leaves for the Brics summit on Sunday. Sources, in this context, also said that Cabinet Minister Uma Bharti had offered to quit a few days ago but there was no official word on her. Sources also said the Union Agriculture Minister and Union Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju may be shifted to different portfolios.

The BJP also named HRD minister of state Mahendra Nath Pandey as Keshav Prasad Maurya's successor as the chief of its Uttar Pradesh unit. While there was no official word about their meeting, it was believed in the party circles that the Cabinet reshuffle and political re-assignment of Union Ministers were discussed.

"This is a decision by the Prime Minister, the government and the party and we are the soldiers of the party".

Those expected to be sworn is as Ministers include BJP general secretary Bhupendra Yadav, and Karnataka leaders Prahlad Joshi and Suresh Angadi.

Existing ministers Dharmendra Pradhan (petroleum) and Piyush Goyal (power), who have independent charge of their respective ministries, may be elevated to Cabinet positions.

Just hours before Rudy's resignation, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, when asked about how much longer he would hold additional charge of the defence portfolio, said: "At least I hope not very long". Pandey is likely to resign as a Union minister as he assumes his new charge, meaning there will be one more vacancy in the Cabinet.

Union Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan is holding additional charge of the Environment Ministry following the death of Anil Madhav Dave in May.
