Sheriff David Clarke Has Resigned

Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. - the controversial, Stetson-wearing official who rose to national prominence with his no-holds-barred conservative rhetoric - resigned his office Thursday.

Clarke's most recent Twitter post from Thursday afternoon showed him posing with law enforcement officers at the National Fraternal Order of Police convention in Nashville.

The Milwaukee County clerk said his letter of resignation was received at 3:17 p.m. A spokesman for the governor said that process will begin as soon as he is officially notified about the resignation by Milwaukee County. Clarke is an ally of President Donald Trump and was briefly considered for a job at the Department of Homeland Security. Clarke said in response that he'd withdrawn his name from consideration.

But Clarke has been fighting a series of scandals in his position as sheriff in Milwaukee County as well, including the death of a mentally ill man who was allegedly deprived of water in his cell.

Conservative groups have called on Clarke to challenge Democratic U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin in 2018, but he has rejected that suggestion. He recently published a memoir, "Cop Under Fire".

For example, Clarke previously said that Black Lives Matter does not "care about black lives".

He was hit by allegations in May that he plagiarized content in his master's thesis on homeland security, which he denied. But as Nick Wing explained at HuffPost, the number of deaths is highly unusual: "Based on an analysis of The Huffington Post's jail death database, other jails that have four deaths in a year are several times the size of Clarke's downtown jail site, which has a capacity of 960".
