Mueller team has draft letter on Trump's Comey firing

The Times report doesn't say what was in the letter, which was originally meant to be sent directly to Comey, according to the Times.

President Donald Trump drafted a letter to fired FBI Director James Comey outlining why he was getting the boot - indicating his refusal to say publicly that Trump wasn't a target in the agency's Russian Federation probe was "hampering the country", The Wall Street Journal reported. While it has often been reported that Trump admitted he fired Comey because of the Russian Federation probe - contrary to days of varied White House explanations - I've never really thought that was entirely accurate.

Comey later confirmed in testimony to Congress in June that he had told the president that he was not under investigation, but said he didn't make that public because the status could change in the future. Lindsey Graham released a statement Wednesday saying Comey had "already decided he would issue a statement exonerating Secretary Clinton" before the Federal Bureau of Investigation had interviewed her.

During the May 8 Oval Office meeting with Mr. Trump, Mr. Rosenstein was given a copy of the original letter and agreed to write a separate memo for Mr. Trump about why Mr. Comey should be fired.

After FBI Director James Comey was sacked, the White House gave conflicting explanations as to why.

Other publications, particularly conservative ones are writing that the former FBI Director, fired by President Trump and who is at the center of the alleged obstruction of justice claim against Trump, are presenting their own take on the issue.

Instead, the letter circulated among White House aides and Justice Department officials the day before Comey's firing. The letter, which is now in the hands of special counsel Robert Mueller, was drafted by Trump and his top aide, Stephen Miller.

Just days later the commander-in-chief admitted in the television interview that the "Russia thing" had had a bearing on his decision and that he would have fired Comey "regardless of recommendation".

The man Donald Trump sent to hand-deliver the infamous letter firing then-FBI Director James Comey in May is planning to leave the president's side after almost 20 years of service.

In an interesting coincidence, while Trump's lawyers are making the case that Comey isn't to be trusted, two Senate Republicans - Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley and Sen. The FBI director famously announced just days before the November election previous year that the bureau was reopening its investigation into Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's use of private email servers. Critics of the president have accused him of firing Comey to disrupt the probe into his campaign.
