Full statement from Sen. John McCain on voting no on Graham-Cassidy

McCain helped deliver the deciding blow to GOP leadership's last effort to repeal Obamacare at the end of July, shocking the political world with his thumb's down.

The plan described as the Graham-Cassidy bill is after the two Republican senators - Lindsey Graham of SC and Bill Cassidy of Louisiana - who sponsored it.

Opponents of the bill, including McCain, have said they can not vote for it until they know how much it would cost and how many people would be affected - something that isn't yet clear.

Republicans are going to try to pass a bill that would kill over 400,000 people within the next decade, because they believe that they have to repeal Obamacare whether it is actually good policy or not.

Thursday night on "Jimmy Kimmel Live", the talk show host did not back down, responding to Republicans who keep bringing him up as the GOP tries to repeal the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.

With McCain and Paul voting no, Republicans can not lose another vote. Republican Sen. Susan Collins of ME has said she is leaning "no" on the proposal, and there are still questions as to where Alaska Republican Sen.

McCain also said he could not vote for a bill without a complete snapshot of its effects from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, which said earlier this week it could only provide a partial picture by next week. Several other Republican senators have been on the fence.

Seen as a last-ditch attempt by the GOP to fulfill its vow to replace the health reform law, the bill would give states more decision-making authority on how to allocate health care dollars. Lindsey Graham, Bill Cassidy, Dean Heller, and Ron Johnson - would set up federal funding in block grants, which states would use to fund healthcare.

He amplified his criticism on Saturday, first tweeting: "John McCain never had any intention of voting for this bill, which his Governor [Doug Ducey] loves". Without McCain's and Paul's announcements, they don't seem destined to get enough votes, as Sens. He campaigned on Repeal & Replace.

On top of all of that, he wrote, the Graham-Cassidy bill is "stunningly cruel" in its seeming indifference to the suffering of patients and its savage cuts to programs that benefit women, children and the poor.

"I know Rand Paul and I think he may find a way to get there for the good of the Party!" "Instead, the specter of September 30th budget reconciliation deadline has hung over this entire process", he said in a statement.

John McCain is an emphatic "No".

Between 2020 and 2026, Missouri would receive $4 billion more in federal health spending under the Graham-Cassidy proposal compared to current law, according to an analysis by Avalere funded by the Center for American Progress.
