Floridians rescue Manatees stranded on shores drained by Irma

A group of Florida residents came across two beached manatees Sunday afternoon in a bay that had dried up as a result of Hurricane Irma.

But it turns out the manatees didn't need the storm surge after all.

"One wasn't moving, the other was breathing and had water in its eyes", Sechler continued.

Strangers banded together to help two manatees stranded by Hurricane Irma.

Another man, Marcelo Clavijo posted that a group of people eventually loaded the manatees onto tarps and dragged them to deeper water, about 100 yards away.

However, he said the commission is anxious that the manatees could end up in areas where they naturally wouldn't once the tide comes back, but he doesn't think they will get injured.

When Hurricane Irma hit southern Florida Sunday, strong winds blowing from the northeast pushed water out of shallow parts of bays and harbors along the Gulf Coast.

"Believe me, we tried to move them", wrote Sechler's friend, Steven Reisinger, in his own Facebook post.

Manatee County resident Marcelo Clavijo posted on Facebook he was going stir-crazy and made a decision to go for a ride when he came across a dry bay.

"So we went for a ride and ended up saving two manatees", Clavijo posted on Facebook.

Yet "we couldn't just let those manatees die out there", Tony Faradini-Campos tells the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

"A lot of times they are out of the water and they are going to be OK, as long as they stay cool", Norris said.

"Normally, if we have to move a manatee, we would use a sling similar to the way you've probably seen dolphins moved", Cover says.
