Erdogan accuses Myanmar of 'genocide' against Rohingya

Journalists and other outside observers have been unable to independently travel to the northwest of Myanmar's Rakhine state since an earlier outbreak of violence a year ago, although some aid programs had quietly been resumed. But it's likely the death toll, particularly that of slain civilians, is higher.

Around 38,000 Rohingya have crossed into Bangladesh from Myanmar, United Nations sources said, a week after Rohingya insurgents attacked police posts and an army base in Rakhine state, prompting clashes and a military counteroffensive.

Survivors said Burmese soldiers were everywhere and that "armed people" were burning houses and killing people. A Reuters reporter who traveled with government minders to the area on Wednesday saw many villages on fire.

The Special Rapporteur noted concerns over both extremist attacks and the major security operations undertaken in response to the attacks.

Myanmar denies persecuting the Rohingya.

During a visit to Hoyaikong Kanjarpara around 11:00am yesterday, these correspondents found some 800 Rohingya men, women and children gathered by BGB.

Numerous new arrivals were women and children, including heavily pregnant women, she said. The claims could not be verified by AFP.

Desperate to reach Bangladesh, thousands of Rohingya have taken to makeshift boats, some constructed from flotsam, in an effort to cross the Naf River which separates the two countries.

Alongside the Rohingya Muslims, over 400 Hindus from Maungdaw made it to Bangladesh yesterday through Rezu Amtola of Ukhia amid attacks by an "unidentified armed group".

The government of Myanmar also blamed the group for the August 26 killing of six Hindu villagers on in Maungtaw Township in northern Rakhine State.

Longstanding tension between the Rohingya Muslims and ethnic Rakhine Buddhists erupted in bloody rioting in 2012.

The military intensified attacks on Rohingya Muslims last Friday after dozens of police and border outposts in Rakhine allegedly came under attack by a group that says it is defending the rights of the Rohingya.

The foreign ministry said while Bangladesh has been cooperating with Myanmar in the security sector, such instances of "violation of sovereignty may affect the existing understanding and cooperation between the two countries".

While the world's Muslim communities celebrated Eid al- Adha, the Rohingya remained in a precarious situation, not knowing their future or the fate of their relatives, Lee said.

The UNHCR India had also called out to the government over its inhumane step and also reminded it that even if the country is not a signatory to the Refugee convention, yet as per the principle of non-refoulement-not sending refugees to a place where they fear persecution-it can not send Rohingyas back to Myanmar.
