Area rescue teams send expertise, special gear to help Harvey survivors

- Gov. Roy Cooper on Sunday announced that North Carolina would be sending help to Texas as the state endures devastating flooding following Hurricane Harvey.

According to the release, some teams deployed Wednesday night and some will deploy Thursday. "We'll be taking our search-and-rescue expertise, search dogs, we'll have our swift water component for floodwater rescues", said MDFR Chief Dave Downey.

An elite urban rescue team from Miami-Dade is heading to Houston to help with search missions through areas flooded by Harvey. Maryland Task Force 1 team members from Montgomery County are in Texas serving in three capacities.

The Adjutant General's Office says the Kansas teams will search for and transport any people and animals stranded by flood waters. They are scheduled to report at Texas A&M University's Emergency Training Center in College Station, Texas and will deploy to action from there.

"We continue to see the images of devastation in Texas and hear the stories of countless people still in danger".

The pair were expected to embed with the "command staff that's overseeing the massive number of response nuts on the ground in Texas", Vancouver Fire and Rescue Capt. Jonathan Gormick explained.

Once the MDFR team arrives in Houston, they will receive instructions as to what part of the state to go next.

Ryan said Tuesday the team was initially diverted by federal authorities to San Antonio for staging until a decision could be made on where to send them.

Task force members bring their own gear in case there's no equipment available at the scene, he said.

"We don't want to be an impact on an area that's already impacted", he said.
