OH reports its first West Nile Virus case of 2017

According to the ODH, a 44-year-old Clermont County man contracted the virus.

Twenty-nine OH counties have reported West Nile virus activity in mosquitoes collected this year as part of statewide surveillance. Local leaders say DHEC confirmed that mosquitos in the same area of Rock Hill are carrying the West Nile virus.

About half of the people who contract the virus don't show any symptoms, as is the case for Sheriff Pelle. Remember that mosquitoes are most active during dusk and dawn.

"Historically, August and September are the months when the majority of human cases occur and represent the greatest risk for acquiring West Nile virus infection", according to the experiment station's director, Theodore Andreadis. WNV is a viral disease affecting the central nervous system that can be transmitted to humans by mosquitoes.

The city is urging residents to take precautions to prevent the spread of West Nile virus.

No human or horse cases have been reported with WNV-associated illnesses acquired in CT this season.

In addition, residents should eliminate all sources of standing water on their property and drain empty flower pots, buckets, barrels, old auto tires, rain gutters and pet bowls. In rare cases, a person can be become ill through a blood transfusion.

There have been 131 identified cases of humans contracting West Nile virus in CT since 2000, with three deaths, according to state records.

Residents can also mosquito-proof their home by installing or repairing screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out.

Recommendations include removing stagnant water sources, keeping animals inside during the bugs' feeding times, which are typically early in the morning and evening, and using mosquito repellents.

Wear long sleeves or long trousers and cover as much of your skin as possible when you are outside, especially between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
