Man 'armed with sword' attacks Buckingham Palace

Natalie Wood wrote: "Police still being called into Buckingham Palace". The agency's official Twitter account posted regular updates on the situation, as many passersby noticed the area had been placed on lock down. A man has been arrested on suspicion of GBH and assault on police.

The incident occurred "at the Mall outside Buckingham Palace", and the suspect was found to be "in possession of knife" when the authorities took him into custody.

One man has been arrested, with the two officers injuries to their arms, Met Police said.

A large number of police vehicles could be seen in the road outside the palace.

"A few minutes later police came by to have us clear the area and move further away from the palace".

"Given what has happened in London in recent months with terrorist attacks, police have significantly stepped up their patrols, particularly around central London".

The Metropolitan Police confirmed no other people were caught up or injured during the incident. They have not been taken to hospital.

No other injuries have been reported.

The palace's most famous resident, Queen Elizabeth II, is now staying at another of her properties, in Scotland.

"Officers remain on scene and enquiries are ongoing".
