Kareem Hunt to begin season as Chiefs' featured back

Rookie Kareem Hunt, a third-round pick out of Toledo, assumes the starting role with Ware sidelined.

One of those season-ending injuries has afflicted Kansas City Chiefs running back Spencer Ware, leaving the team without their projected starter in the backfield.

"He damaged those and at this point in time, our medical staff believes that he needs season-ending surgery to correct that problem", Burkholder said, according to the Kansas City Star.

Ware has a sprained LCL in addition to the PCL tear after going down with a non-contact injury in Friday's preseason game. Nothing stood out, except as Ware attempted to stand up, he fell back to the ground in crippling pain. Fans and coaches both recognized a serious injury could have occurred. Burkholder reiterated that the excellent training staff would, "exhaust all options", before determining Ware will be out for the year. Veteran C.J. Spiller is also in the mix.

Last season, Ware appeared in 14 regular-season games for the Chiefs en route to receiving a single-season career-high 214 carries.
