UK Hospital Says Terminally Ill Baby to Have 'More Time'

Ten-month-old Charlie is one of only a handful of babies in the world to suffer from mitochondrial depletion syndrome, a rare genetic condition that causes...

Charlie Gard was born on August 4, 2016. "It is very unlikely that he will improve with that therapy". In other words, as I have already said, it is futile. The decision has been met with controversy, as some say it should be the parents who decide, not the courts.

"We and most importantly Charlie have been massively let down throughout this whole process".

Charlie's parents appealed the ruling unsuccessfully several times - first with the Court of Appeals of England and Wales, then with the United Kingdom Supreme Court.

On June 27, however, the European court refused to intervene in the case.

However, the court in Strasbourg, France, ultimately ruled that the imperative to act in Charlie's best interests and not prolong his suffering outweighed the vanishingly small likelihood of successful treatment.

Connie Yates and Chris Gard lost their final appeal Tuesday and hospital personnel had planned to turn off life support Friday, but made an announcement they had chose to give the parents more time with him before doing it. Their alternative? Withdraw life support, administer palliative care, and let Charlie "die with dignity".

Charlie is now receiving life-sustaining treatment at the Great Ormond Street Hospital, where the baby and his parents have lived for months following his devastating diagnosis of mitochondrial depletion syndrome.

The parents of a terminally ill boy in the United Kingdom have learned that their son will not be allowed home to die. "Our final wish if it all went against us, can we take our little boy home to die, and we are not allowed".

The domestic courts had concluded, on the basis of extensive, high-quality expert evidence, that it was most likely Charlie was being exposed to continued pain, suffering and distress and that undergoing experimental treatment with no prospects of success would offer no benefit, and continue to cause him significant harm'. Both preferences were rejected by the hospital, according to Gard. The hospital, in turn, said they would not release the boy because the treatment might not be the best course of action. He has to die in that hospital tomorrow [30 June 2017].

Great Ormond Street Hospital has since disclosed it is putting plans in place for Charlie's care to allow his family to spend more time with him. Connie Yates claimed: "We've literally begged them today to give us this weekend". So the last time they saw Charlie will be the last time they ever see him.

"We would ask you to give the family and our staff some space and privacy at this distressing time".

The family received donations totalling more than £1.3m to take Charlie to the USA for therapy. But the hospital's doctors said that, given Charlie's condition, the therapy was unlikely to have a beneficial outcome.
