Trump defends social media use after controversial tweets

"And let me explain what they were threatening", she said.

Since Thursday there have been back-and-forth tweets between Trump and the hosts of MSNBC's morning television show "Morning Joe". "We ignored their desperate pleas".

TV hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski have accused President Trump of trying to destroy their reputations as serious commentators.

"We have our doubts, but we are both certain that the man is not mentally equipped to continue watching our show, Morning Joe".

At the same time, on other networks, Trump aides blamed Scarborough and Brzezinski for "exhibiting what they said was anti-Trump bias and animosity", CNN reported. "I won the 2016 election with interviews, speeches and social media", he tweeted on Saturday, before he went on to call his social media usage - "not presidential", but "modern day presidential".

American Media said in a statement "we have no knowledge of any discussions between the White House and Joe and Mika about our story, and absolutely no involvement in those discussions".

Scarborough and Brzezinski believe that Trump deliberately planted the story at the time to embarrass them.

The northern Virginia congresswoman was one of several Republicans to denounce the president's tweets.

Earlier in the day Trump tweeted about the hosts of "Morning Joe" speaking "badly of [him]".

"It's been fascinating and frightening and really sad for our country", she said on the programme.

The presenters denied Brzezinski had a face-lift but said she "did have a little skin under her chin tweaked".

About two hours before his tweets, Brzezinski said on the show that "it's not normal behaviour" for any leader to be tweeting about people's appearances or to be bullying, lying, undermining managers and throwing people under the bus.

There was no immediate comment from the National Enquirer, a tabloid that specialises in scandalous stories about celebrities and has been supportive of Mr Trump.

Exactly why Trump is parsing the difference between "fake" and "fraud" in his nickname for CNN went unexplained in this afternoon's presidential Twitter triptych.

"Crazy Joe Scarborough and dumb as a rock Mika are not bad people, but their low rated show is dominated by their NBC bosses".
