Sony to start making vinyl records again

Sony to start making vinyl records again

Due to the 30-year gap in production, Sony has a limited number of trained engineers in making its vinyl records.

Three decades after it abandoned vinyl production, Sony will start making records again on the back of surging demand for the retro music format.

One of the world's biggest record labels is going retro.

The company installed record-cutting equipment at a Tokyo recording studio in February, allowing them to produced masters from which vinyl records are created.

But despite the current popularity of digital music services like Spotify, old school records are enjoying a renaissance.

So many hipsters are buying vinyl that Sony Music has made a decision to resurrect its printing press. Almost 800,000 vinyl records were sold in Japan a year ago, Nikkei reported, an eightfold increase from 2010.

Turntables as well as other accessories related to records are benefitting as well.

CNN Money reports Sony will begin producing records by March 2018 in a factory near Tokyo. Former engineers are returning to the company in advisory roles to pass on their expertise to younger employees, the spokeswoman added.

HMV opened its vinyl-focused store in Shibuya, Japan, nearly two years after sales began to show strong growth, while supermarkets including Sainsbury's and Tesco began selling vinyl after LP sales rose by 800% in 2015. The phonograph disc record, commonly known as vinyl record, was the king of music reproduction throughout the twentieth century.
