Donald Trump Encourages Police To "Not Be So Nice" When Arresting Suspects

Donald Trump Encourages Police To

During a rally in Suffolk County, New York on Friday, (July 28) Trump told officers to "not be so nice" while delivering a speech about gang violence and illegal immigration.

In the speech in Long Island, New York, that largely focused on the MS13 gang, Trump told officers "Please don't be too nice" to crime suspects.

"Your Second Amendment is safe", Trump said.

He also said that there was no need for police to use their hands to protect the heads of individuals under arrest as they were put into cars. "You could take the hand away".

Police departments across the country are hitting back at President Donald Trump after a "joke" he made about roughing up suspects.

In a statement released after Trump's speech, the International Associations of Chiefs of Police said that "law enforcement agencies develop policies and procedures, as well as conduct extensive training, to ensure that any use of force is carefully applied and objectively reasonable considering the situation confronted by the officers".

Ben Tobias, a spokesman for the police department in Gainesville, Florida, also criticized the president's remarks. "Like, don't hit their head and they've just killed somebody".

Some police leaders anxious that three sentences uttered by the president during a Long Island speech could upend almost three decades of fence-mending since the 1991 Los Angeles Police Department beating of Rodney King ushered in an era of distrust of police.

Likewise, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund criticized the comments as endangering those taken into police custody. DeRay McKesson, a prominent voice in the Black Lives Matter movement who made an unsuccessful bid to become mayor of Baltimore, pointed to the reaction of the law enforcement officials Trump spoke to.

"The President of the United States has no business endorsing or condoning cops being rough with arrestees and suggesting that we should slam their heads onto the vehicle while putting them in", the department said in a Facebook post. "Totally protect the criminal, not the officers". Zeke Johnson, the senior director of programs at Amnesty International USA noted Trump's "inflammatory and hateful speech will only escalate tensions between police and communities".

"Violations of those rules are treated extremely seriously", the department wrote.

"This led to protests, a riot and an unprecedented two-year spike in violence that now has the city on track for close to 400 homicides this year, more than NY, which is 14 times larger".

The president praised the increasing militarization of United States police, saying "You know, when you wanted to take over and you used military equipment - and they were saying you couldn't do it - you know what I said?"

In this city it is clear that, as the Justice Department concluded, the police force's "relationship with certain Baltimore communities is broken". He was telling them that they shouldn't be afraid to do their jobs; that they shouldn't be thinking in the back of their minds about losing their job or pension if they do what is required to keep people safe.
