Tillerson cancels trip to Mexico to work on Qatar crisis

In what appeared to be a coordinated move, foreign office officials alleged Qatar was responsible for supporting the Islamic State group and al-Qaeda "at all levels" in an unprecedented diplomatic spat for the Gulf region.

The International Olympic Committee said on Thursday it hoped the diplomatic and economic boycott of Qatar by its Gulf neighbours would not affect sports development in the region.

"Although the kingdom is a party in this crisis, we know that King Salman is a party in resolving it", Cavusoglu said earlier.

Mr Faki warned that if the rift is allowed to escalate further, it could have adverse political, security and humanitarian implications for the Gulf states, Africa and worldwide peace and security.

They accuse Qatar of funding terrorism and cosying up to Iran, all of which Qatar denies.

So in addition to our effort to change Qatari policies, the United States should also lay down some markers with the Saudis, who have their own history of exporting extremism, and insist that they and their partners cease blockading Qatar and seek to resolve their differences diplomatically.

The list included several high-profile Qatari charities that carry out life-saving work across the Middle East and elsewhere, including in Syria, Yemen, Sudan and Palestine. Yet Trump, fresh from his trip to Riyadh, seemed to giddily join the Saudi and UAE bandwagon. The U.S. previously turned against Pakistan following revelations that Al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden had been hiding in a compound in Abbottabad.

Saudi Arabia's foreign minister said on Friday that a list of grievances involving Qatar was being drawn up and would be made public soon.

The crisis in the Persian Gulf will not deepen, next year we will probably see a new type of relations in the Middle East, Arab World expert Prof. "The $12 billion sale will give Qatar a state of the art capability and increase security cooperation and interoperability between the United States and Qatar", Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Roger Cabiness told CNN. He rejected allegations that Saudi Arabia was suspending aid worth $50 million (44 million euros) until the Horn of Africa nation severs ties with Qatar.

Tillerson and Mattis need to continue to make it abundantly clear: when USA interests are at stake, we will consult with allies, but only the United States will decide. And when Qatar disagreed publicly, in a statement the government later said was a product of hacking, the Saudi-led retribution followed.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson spoke by telephone with his Omani counterpart, Oman state news agency reported.

"The time had come to call on Qatar to end its funding - they have to end that funding - and its extremist ideology in terms of funding", he added.

"We have been cooperating with Russian Federation and Iran in the Astana negotiating process, we call on Saudi Arabia and the United States to join the talks", Erdogan said.
