Rosenworcel Renom: Handicapping What's Next at the FCC

Rosenworcel Renom: Handicapping What's Next at the FCC

Rosenworcel will become a key ally to other Democratic Commissioner Mignon Clyburn on net neutrality against FCC Chairman Ajit Pai and his Republican colleague Michael O'Reilly.

President Donald Trump has nominated former FCC commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel to rejoin the USA federal telecom regulator, filling a seat made empty by. herself.

ROSENWORCEL was one of the three Democrats on the panel in 2012-16, but when her term expired and her nomination was not acted upon by the Senate, her nomination was withdrawn and she exited the Commission.

In March, Trump reportedly withdrew Rosenworcel's renomination by President Barack Obama from the Senate. Clyburn's tenure is set to expire at the end of this month, and the Trump Administration has not said whether it intends to renominate her for another term.

The Senate must confirm her to retake the position.

Trump has not announced who he intends to nominate for the GOP seat, though it's widely believed to be FCC gen counsel Brendan Carr, who before taking the post in January spent three years as FCC chmn Ajit Pai's wireless, public safety and global legal adviser. But no Republican candidate has been announced yet.

The White House has nominated former FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel to return as a commissioner.

Now the FCC is down to only three members, two Republicans and a Democrat. "During her first term as commissioner, Jessica proved to be an outstanding public servant who championed policies that enable American consumers to benefit from the tremendous changes taking place in the communications and technology marketplace".

"Sen. [John] Thune is pleased to see Jessica Rosenworcel's nomination moving forward", said a spokesman for the Senate Commerce Committee.

"CCA shares her commitment to ensuring wireless services for all Americans, especially for consumers in rural and remote areas, and her focus on closing the homework gap will benefit all Americans", he added. It is not clear if Clyburn plans to stay on the commission.

The National Association of Broadcasters also voiced its support for Rosenworcel's return to the Commission on Wednesday.

Democrats insisted Republicans had agreed in 2015 to reconfirm Rosenworcel as part of a deal to confirm O'Rielly.

Pai congratulated Rosenworcel, saying, "I look forward to working with her once again to advance the public interest".

This appointment rights a wrong, because she deserved confirmation a year ago, and should have been sitting on the Commission all along.
