Ham radio operators use field day event to hone skills

Winona Ham Radio enthusiasts gathered on Saturday for the annual Field Day at Wincrest Park, and spent a day experimenting with electronics in a communication trailer.

Foundations of Amateur Radio is a weekly podcast about the 1000 hobbies that make Ham Radio what it is.

An amateur radio clumb in Albemarle County is demonstrating how the world would have to communicate if cell phones go out during an emergency situation.

Tom Christovich, a club member, said the drill, which will continue through the night, is "part exercise and part competition where a ham can acquire points".

It's also a contest of sort against other amateur (ham) radio operators.

There are about 25 members in the Lawrence County club.

The radios use things like solar panels to operate and allow the operators to relay messages to their counterparts across the nation.

"Hams are prepared to offer technical solutions and provide support for rescuers during times of national emergencies and natural disasters", Christovich said.

Czaikowski said he's been a ham for 54 years and he sees more people becoming hams than 50 years ago. In order for a contact to be made there must be an exchange of information between operators. All ham radio operators have to take classes in order to sit for a Federal Communication Commission license.

One member recalls a disaster when demonstrations like this one became reality.

It's that reason, that events like field day are important, so operators can hone their skills for those times when they need them most.

The radio operation is expected to continue until 2 p.m. Sunday.
