Flashback: Clinton White House Said On-Camera Briefings Weren't 'Necessary'

The press briefing will not be allowed to broadcast on TV networks, except for the audio of Spicer's responses to reporters.

"Jousting with the press secretary doesn't really get us that far to understanding things better, ' Isaacson said, adding that it made "total sense" to have more weekly presidential press conferences and background briefings that last hours instead of people trying to "joust on camera".

But in the larger media war, neither side has much reason to cooperate - and so we can expect this particular battle to continue for the foreseeable future. "The president and his administration serve the people who elected them, yet the Trump Administration's decision to ban cameras and live audio from an increasing number of daily briefing treats the people, the media and the oath of office as little more than inconveniences".

By Common Cause's count there have been only five on camera briefings by White House press officials during the entire month of June.

Acosta, who has vocally opposed to the White House's press briefings not being on camera, said that he tried asking White House deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders about fundraisers President Donald Trump is hosting for Republicans at Trump-owned properties.

A second source close to the administration confirmed the plan and said White House staffers are on board - for now.

"What brings you here, Sean?" one reporter asked the press secretary. "You are a taxpayer-funded spokesman for the United States government, can you at least give us an explanation for why the cameras are off?"

In an interview with MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell, the president of the Aspen Institute acknowledged his view was "heretical", but he insisted that he would prefer more background briefings because "everybody performs" when the cameras are turned on.

"There appears to be no more substance in Spicer's answers when the cameras are off versus when they are on". Raising the idea that Comey may have been taped in the White House "was a smart way to make sure he stayed honest in those (congressional) hearings", she said. "Talk to the camera and that voter in MI, talk to them directly".

In case anyone needs a reminder, the press restrictions are only going to get worse under Trump not better. Maybe they won't even notice. "We need the glitz and the Hollywood - he's a showman".
