Britain, EU to begin Brexit negotiations on Monday

May has dismissed calls to resign following the dismal election result after calling a vote three years early, in the hope of bolstering her slim majority ahead of Brexit talks starting this month.

After days of political turmoil sparked by her botched gamble on a snap election, May's Conservative Party resumed talks with a small Northern Irish Protestant party on securing the support of its 10 members of parliament to pass legislation.

"The talks are continuing but I think the events in London today probably will have some impact on that".

He told Sky News: "It's in the week of next week, basically, the first discussions".

"The big clash that we feared isn't there", said one senior official involved.

Among these was whether Britain's position would "be the same as in the letter of March 29" when May triggered the two-year Brexit countdown.

The UK's Brexit secretary David Davis and European Union negotiator Michel Barnier will begin negotiations on Monday after prime minister Theresa May invoked article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, which starts the clock on the UK's departure from the European Union ahead of a departure deadline of March 2019.

"I think there is a unity of objective among people in the United Kingdom", May said following a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday. Because this is not about the Tories leaving the EU.

But pressure was mounting for May to change course on the type of Brexit Britain should pursue. Ms Day expects the start of negotiations on Monday to be "an opening" and focused on "procedure rather than substance" and "setting out the ground rules".

Before the election, May proposed a clean break from the European Union, involving withdrawal from the European Union single market, limits on immigration and a bespoke customs deal with the EU.

The commission is awaiting the UK's response to papers outlining reciprocal rights for European Union nationals in Britain and Britons living in the European Union, and the financial settlement for Britain leaving the bloc. "I can't negotiate with myself", he told the Financial Times newspaper. "The reality is that where we stand follows logically from leaving, so, if we're leaving, what we need to do is do it smoothly and successfully and gain economic benefit".

France's President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday that "the door remains open" for the United Kingdom to ditch plans for Brexit and stay in the EU.

"Like Alice in Wonderland, not all the doors are the same". "Party interest or national interest?"

And as leaders welcomed the new tone in London and talk of a "softer Brexit" that may be less disruptive than May's clean break with the single market and customs union, officials from at least some governments saw compromise on the British bill.

Major, who helped to bring about that peace, said he was concerned that May's arrangement with the DUP could pitch the province back into turmoil by persuading "hard men" on both sides of the divide to return to violence.
