Agent rules managerial target out of Leeds job consideration

"Last season was one of the most competitive in the Championship in years - there's real quality".

GARRY MONK today revealed Steve Gibson's vision convinced him to take charge of relegated Middlesbrough.

Gibson is keen to return to the top tier, but it's highly likely Albion will be forced to wait to see if any top-six clubs snap him up first.

Stam has been linked with the Leeds United job in recent days, after Garry Monk's resignation.

As far as his the thought process that went into opting for Middlesbrough is concerned, Monk said that after weighing upall his options he decided that the job ticked all the boxes.

"I don't want to get into details to be honest", he said.

"That determination really struck me".

"All of those boxes that I needed ticked, as well as being able to move forward with the club, Middlesbrough had it".

The ex-Netherlands global also used to play for Leeds' rivals Manchester United during his playing career - something which has also come up with the Yorkshire clubs' supporters.

Monk has yet to finalise his backroom staff or decide the future of former head coach Steve Agnew and won't meet his players until they report back for pre-season training later this month.

If the club manage to keep hold of the majority of their players, and with the possibility of money being available for new signings, then expectations will be high that Boro can bounce back at the first attempt.

He also accused Monk of using negative tactics, and it seems Leeds fans do not want Stam due to his own defensive philosophy.

"Leeds are a great club, I loved it".

"It is about looking who is here, assessing them and maybe trying to add to the squad".

"Promotion has to be the ambition, and that's the kind of challenge that you want".
