New immigration crime hotline focus of prank calling campaign

New immigration crime hotline focus of prank calling campaign

The Department of Homeland Security will officially open its office Wednesday to help victims of crimes committed by illegal immigrants.

Asked why he opposes the new office, McCoy said resources for victims of crime already exist, but the Trump administration is highlighting offenses committed by immigrants in order to advance his "long attack" against the community.

David Lapan, chief spokesman for Homeland Security, said the goal of the new office is to assist victims, not to attack immigrants.

Critics say the new program will only add to the climate of discrimination and to the hatred of all immigrants. Some advocates see the program as a way to justify aggressive enforcement against immigrants, who they said commit crimes at one-third the rate of native-born residents.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement denied Thursday that a reported wave of prank calls to a hotline for the victims of undocumented immigrant crime had disrupted the hotline. The office's creation was also part of an executive order aimed at combating illegal immigration.

"There's nothing but goodness in what we're doing today in establishing this office, as it's an outreach to victims of these crimes", Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly (pictured below) announced Wednesday. Michelle Root said she struggled to get information from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The suspect, Eswin Mejia of Honduras, posted bail in his criminal case and disappeared.

Despite a campaign pledge to end the Obama policy on so-called dreamers, people who came to the US illegally as children, President Trump made it clear they will be allowed to stay. The agency is not supposed to release information on children in immigration custody, said Gillian M. Christensen, acting Homeland Security press secretary.

What it does do is issue reports on crimes allegedly committed by undocumented immigrants, and allows anonymous users to track the whereabouts of anyone detained for such crimes. "These are casualties of crimes that should never have taken place because the people who victimized them oftentimes should not have been in the country in the first place". "The immigration system is so complicated, there wasn't anyone there to tell [victims] what has been happening on the immigration side", said DHS spokesman David Lapan.

"They didn't want to hear us, they didn't want to listen us, and they didn't really care", Ronnebeck said.
